Speeking of speed and such...
A while back I came across the following web site. The person running
the site was doing a fairly good job of building some comparitive
samples of different programming languages. He created several
different test cases and then programmed a sample solution in many
different languages, then ran some tests to see how well they performed.

A comment in the intro kind of sums up where he stood in the tests.
